Toe deformities
Hammer, mallet and claw toes are deformities in which one or more smaller toes become bent. They may remain flexible at first and become more rigid over time.
What are toe deformities?
Hammer, mallet and claw toes are deformities in which one or more smaller toes become bent. They may remain flexible at first and become more rigid over time.
What causes it?
There may be more than one cause or contributing factor. These can include:
- A previous injury
- Shoes that crowd the toes
- Pressure from a bunion or a longer metatarsal bone
- Muscle imbalance
- Rare inherited nerve conditions
What are the symptoms?
Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:
- Pain where the toe rubs against a shoe
- A hard area of skin or callus over the toe joint
- Pain or callus beneath the ball of the foot
- A toe that becomes increasingly bent or stiff
How is it diagnosed?
Your consultant will examine the toes and may arrange X-rays to look for related problems such as a bunion or a long metatarsal.
We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through what the results mean for you.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on the cause, the severity of your symptoms and the activities you want to return to. We’ll help you understand your options before you decide what happens next.
- Shoes with enough depth and room for the toes
- Padding or toe protection
- Insoles to reduce pressure under the ball of the foot

How to pay
We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance
If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself
You don’t need private medical insurance to access care at Fortius. If you’re paying for your own treatment, our team will explain the costs clearly and provide a personalised quote before you decide whether to go ahead.
