Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail develops when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. It most often affects the big toe and can cause pain, redness and inflammation. If the skin breaks, an infection can develop.

What are ingrown toenails?

An ingrown toenail develops when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. It most often affects the big toe and can cause pain, redness and inflammation. If the skin breaks, an infection can develop.

What causes it?

There may be more than one cause or contributing factor. These can include:

  • Cutting the nail too short or rounding its edges
  • A fungal nail infection
  • Losing or damaging a nail during sport
  • Shoes that place pressure on the toes
  • A family tendency to develop ingrown nails

What are the symptoms?

Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:

  • Pain and tenderness around the nail
  • Redness or swelling
  • Discharge if the area becomes infected
  • Pain when pressure is placed on the toe or when wearing shoes

How is it diagnosed?

Your consultant will examine the toe and ask how long the problem has been present. The appearance of the nail and surrounding skin is usually enough to confirm the diagnosis.

We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through what the results mean for you.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, the severity of your symptoms and the activities you want to return to. We’ll help you understand your options before you decide what happens next.

  • Footwear with enough room around the toes
  • Careful nail care and avoiding cutting into the corners
  • Antibiotics if an infection is present and they are advised
