Hindfoot arthritis
The hindfoot includes the ankle bone, heel bone and the joints connecting them to the middle of the foot. These joints help the foot adapt when you walk, particularly on uneven ground. Hindfoot arthritis develops when the smooth surfaces inside one or more of these joints become damaged, causing pain, stiffness and sometimes a change in foot shape.
What is hindfoot arthritis?
The hindfoot includes the ankle bone, heel bone and the joints connecting them to the middle of the foot. These joints help the foot adapt when you walk, particularly on uneven ground. Hindfoot arthritis develops when the smooth surfaces inside one or more of these joints become damaged, causing pain, stiffness and sometimes a change in foot shape.
What causes it?
There may be more than one reason why this develops. Possible causes or contributing factors include:
- A previous fracture, even many years earlier
- Rheumatoid or another inflammatory type of arthritis
- Osteoarthritis without an obvious injury
- A problem with the tendon supporting the arch, causing the foot to flatten
What are the symptoms?
Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:
- Aching in the middle or back of the foot when walking
- Stiffness, particularly on uneven ground
- Swelling around the ankle or side of the foot
- The foot becoming flatter or changing shape
- Shoes rubbing or wearing out more quickly
How is it diagnosed?
Your consultant will examine the foot, assess its shape and movement, and discuss your symptoms. X-rays can confirm arthritis. A CT scan may be used to identify exactly which joints are involved.
We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through the results, so you understand what they mean for you.
How is it treated?
Treatment aims to reduce pain, support the foot and help you remain mobile. The right approach depends on which joints are affected and how much the arthritis interferes with everyday life. Together, we’ll build a plan around your needs, your recovery and the activities that matter most to you.
- Pain relief or anti-inflammatory medicine, if advised
- Stiff-soled or rocker-bottom shoes
- Insoles moulded to support the foot
- Changes to activities that make pain worse
- Steroid and anaesthetic injections
- Physiotherapy to maintain muscle flexibility and strength
Your consultant will help you understand which options may be right for you and when your progress should be reviewed.

How to pay
We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance
If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself
You don’t need private medical insurance to access care at Fortius. If you’re paying for your own treatment, our team will explain the costs clearly and provide a personalised quote before you decide whether to go ahead.
