Associate Professor Richard Weiler - Professional Bio
Dr Richard Weiler treats sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions in patients of any age and activity level, with a particular interest in lower limb injuries, acute and overuse injuries, bone stress injuries, joint rehabilitation following injury or surgery, tendon injuries and groin pain. His approach is holistic, helping patients return to function and reach their goals. He has over 20 years’ experience in the non-operative management of sports injuries, having rehabilitated athletes of all abilities, from Olympic and Paralympic athletes to International and Premier League footballers, Track & Field athletes, rugby players, cricketers and dancers. He also treats non-athletes with musculoskeletal conditions such as back and joint pain, working closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to support their rehabilitation.
He has worked as a FIFA Medical Officer since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, including four further FIFA World Cups (U20 World Cup Argentina, Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023, Club World Cup USA 2025 and World Cup USA/Mexico/Canada 2026) and the Paris Olympics 2024.
He has served as Lead Sports Physician at West Ham United Football Club for over 14 years, is Chief Medical Officer for British Bobsleigh, has supported Surrey County Cricket Club’s first team during T20 matches, and has worked as a Team GB Medical Officer with sliders and skiers at the Pyeongchang 2018, Beijing 2022 and Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics — not without the odd on-camera tumble of his own!
He spent 20 years working with England Para Football at the Football Association, stepping down from his role as Lead Para Performance Doctor in 2025. He has worked across three Paralympic cycles with GB Para Football: Beijing 2008, London 2012, and as Preparation Camp Medical Lead for Rio 2016. He also supported British Athletics’ preparation for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.
Dr Richard Weiler qualified from the University of Bristol in 1999, achieved a distinction in his Royal College Membership exams for General Practice, and went on to complete an MSc with distinction in Sports & Exercise Medicine from UCL in 2008. He was awarded his PhD in 2023 from the Vrije University, Amsterdam, for his thesis on improving para sport concussion care.
