Ultrasound

Gentle, real-time diagnostic imaging to evaluate soft tissue pain, swelling, and joint movement.

Ultrasound

World-class ultrasound imaging, diagnostics and expert care for rapid injury assessment.

An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to create live images of the area being examined. It can help your specialist understand what may be causing your pain or affecting your movement.

At Fortius Clinic, our consultant radiologists use the latest ultrasound technology to assess soft tissues such as muscles and tendons. Because the images appear on screen as the scan takes place, your radiologist can dynamically assess how the affected area behaves when you move. Ultrasound scans can be used in diagnosing a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries.

We offer both diagnostic ultrasound scans and ultrasound-guided procedures at all of our outpatient clinics. We can usually arrange an appointment within 24 hours.

How is an ultrasound scan carried out?

Phase 1

Preparation & Discussion

Your radiologist talks you through the scan and answers any questions before it begins. You may need to remove some clothing so they can examine the affected area.

Phase 2

The Scan

You usually sit or lie down while a clear gel is applied to your skin. Your radiologist gently moves a small handheld device called a probe over the area, and may ask you to change position or move the affected joint to get a better view.

Phase 3

Completion & Next Steps

The scan shouldn't hurt, although you may feel some pressure if the area is already sore. Once finished, you can wipe away the gel and carry on with your day as usual. If you are having an ultrasound-guided injection, the scan helps place the needle correctly.

How to pay

We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance

If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself

You don’t need private medical insurance to access care at Fortius. If you’re paying for your own treatment, our team will explain the costs clearly and provide a personalised quote before you decide whether to go ahead.
