Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a systemic bone condition characterised by reduced bone density and thinning bone tissue, making bones fragile and significantly more susceptible to fractures.

What Causes Osteoporosis?

Bone is living tissue that constantly breaks down and rebuilds. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone fails to keep pace with the loss of old bone. Post-menopausal women are at the highest risk due to falling oestrogen levels, which accelerate bone density loss. Key risk factors include demographics and genetics, medical conditions, lifestyle factors

What Are the Symptoms?

In its early stages, osteoporosis typically causes no pain or symptoms. As bones become more severely weakened, signs may include:

  • Unexplained back pain caused by a collapsed or fractured vertebra (vertebral compression fracture)
  • Gradual loss of height over time
  • A stooped posture or progressive rounding of the upper back (kyphosis)
  • A bone fracture occurring much more easily than expected, such as from a minor trip or bump

How Is It Diagnosed?

Because osteoporosis often remains hidden until a fracture occurs, early diagnostic screening is crucial for preserving bone strength. Your Fortius specialist may arrange:

  • DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry): A quick, painless imaging procedure that measures bone mineral density, typically in the spine and hips, to confirm a diagnosis and assess fracture risk.
  • X-rays: To identify existing structural changes, micro-fractures, or vertebral compression fractures in the spine.
  • Blood tests: To evaluate calcium and vitamin D levels, kidney function, and underlying hormonal markers.

How Is It Treated?

Treatment focuses on slowing bone density loss, strengthening existing bone structure, and preventing future fractures through lifestyle, medical, and surgical interventions.

Treatment routes for osteoporosis

Optimising bone health involves a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, combined with tailored weight-bearing and resistance exercises. Stopping smoking and moderating alcohol intake are essential steps in protecting long-term bone density.
