Orthopaedic & Spinal Infections
Orthopaedic infections affect the bones, joints, and surrounding tissues, including the spine. They often start from a skin infection or an open wound, and can occasionally develop after a bone fracture or surgery. If untreated, these infections can spread into the bones (osteomyelitis) or joints (septic arthritis), leading to serious long-term damage.
What causes orthopaedic infections?
Infections occur when bacteria enter the bloodstream or directly reach a joint or bone through a wound, fracture, or surgical site. Certain underlying health conditions and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of developing an infection: Medical conditions: Rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, haemophilia, HIV, and sickle cell anaemia Lifestyle factors: Smoking, being significantly overweight, a poor diet, and poor hygiene practices
What are the symptoms?
If you notice signs of an infection around a wound or joint, you should seek medical advice promptly to prevent permanent bone or tissue damage. Key symptoms include:
- Swelling, redness, or inflammation around a wound or joint
- Stiffness or difficulty moving the affected area
- Pus or discharge draining from the wound site
- High temperature, fever, or feeling generally unwell
If you have an open fracture with visible bone or an open wound, this is a medical emergency requiring urgent surgical evaluation and treatment.
How is it diagnosed?
Your Fortius specialist will begin with a thorough discussion of your medical history and symptoms. To determine the precise location and extent of the infection, they may arrange:
- Diagnostic imaging: X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans to assess damage to bone and soft tissue
- Blood tests: To check markers of inflammation and infection
- Fluid aspiration: Removing a small fluid sample from the wound or joint to identify the specific type of bacteria causing the infection
How is it treated?
Treatment aims to eliminate the infection, protect the bone structure, and preserve joint function.

Treatment routes for orthopaedic infections
For localised or early infections, the specialist may drain fluid or pus from the wound and prescribe targeted antibiotics to eradicate the bacteria.
