Medial meniscal injury
A medial meniscal injury affects the shock-absorbing cartilage on the inside of the knee. The right treatment can help settle pain, restore movement and protect healthy tissue within the joint.
What causes a medial meniscal injury?
The medial meniscus is injured more often than the lateral meniscus because it is less mobile and is attached to the joint capsule and medial collateral ligament. A tear can happen when a bent knee twists while the foot stays planted, often during a turning sport. The tissue can also become more fragile with age and tear after a smaller movement.
What are the symptoms?
- pain on the inside of the knee
- swelling and restricted movement
- pain when twisting, kneeling or bending deeply
- clicking, catching or locking if part of the meniscus becomes trapped
How is it diagnosed?
Your specialist will examine your knee and discuss the onset of your symptoms. An MRI scan is usually used to confirm the tear and assess the surrounding joint.
How is it treated?
Treatment is tailored to the tear, your symptoms, your age, the condition of the knee and the activities that matter to you.

Treatment routes for Medial meniscal injury
This may include activity changes, measures to manage pain and swelling, and physiotherapy to rebuild movement and strength. An ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection may sometimes be considered when degenerative change or osteoarthritis contributes to the pain; it does not heal the tear.

How to pay
We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance
If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself
You don’t need private medical insurance to access care at Fortius. If you’re paying for your own treatment, our team will explain the costs clearly and provide a personalised quote before you decide whether to go ahead.
