Care shaped around you

Together, we’ll build a treatment plan around your diagnosis, your goals and what matters most to you.

What causes avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis)?

There may be more than one cause or contributing factor. These can include: A hip fracture or dislocation that damages blood vessels Long-term or high-dose steroid treatment Heavy alcohol use Sickle cell disease, Gaucher disease or lupus In some cases, no clear cause is found

What are the symptoms?

Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:

  • Hip pain that may spread into the groin or buttock
  • Pain that gradually worsens
  • Difficulty standing or putting weight through the joint
  • Reduced walking and everyday activity

How is it diagnosed?

Your consultant will examine the hip and discuss your symptoms and medical history. X-rays and an MRI scan can confirm the diagnosis and show how advanced it is.

We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through what the results mean for you.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, the severity of your symptoms and the activities you want to return to. We’ll help you understand your options before you decide what happens next.
