Mr Joideep Phadnis Consultant Elbow and Shoulder Surgeon

Professor Joideep Phadnis is a specialist Elbow and Shoulder Surgeon and is widely recognised as one of the leading elbow surgeons in Europe. He has a high-volume tertiary referral practice at University Hospitals Sussex in Brighton, where he manages the full spectrum of complex elbow and shoulder conditions. His practice attracts referrals from across the UK, including patients referred by other consultant surgeons for specialist opinions, complex reconstruction and revision surgery.

Joideep has particular expertise in complex elbow surgery, including sports injuries, instability, arthroscopy, tendon disorders, arthritis, joint replacement, trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction. He also treats elite and professional athletes with elbow problems, with an emphasis on accurate diagnosis, restoration of function and safe return to high-level sport. A major focus of his practice is the development and application of innovative surgical techniques. He uses advanced arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques, computer-planned surgery, patient-specific technology and complex reconstructive procedures to address problems that may not be amenable to conventional treatment. Alongside his clinical practice, Joideep has an extensive academic and research portfolio in elbow and shoulder surgery.

He holds a PhD and is Professor of Elbow and Shoulder Surgery at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. He has authored around 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is actively involved in clinical research ranging from surgical innovation and observational studies to major collaborative clinical trials. His research interests include elbow instability and trauma, arthroscopy, joint replacement, tendon disorders, complex reconstruction and improving outcomes for patients undergoing shoulder and elbow surgery. Joideep is a co-founder of the Global Elbow Network, an international collaboration bringing together leading elbow surgeons and researchers with the aim of advancing the understanding and treatment of elbow disorders. He is also research lead for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and contributes to other national and international specialist organisations. Education and surgical training form an important part of his work. Joideep is an invited international lecturer and regularly speaks at specialist meetings and conferences in the UK and overseas. He teaches established and emerging surgical techniques to consultant surgeons and trainees and runs and contributes to numerous specialist elbow and shoulder courses. He is also Director of the Sussex Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, providing advanced subspecialist training to the next generation of shoulder and elbow surgeons. In recognition of his contribution to clinical care, research, education and innovation, Joideep was awarded a National Clinical Excellence Award in 2023, with particular recognition of his work in elbow surgery.

His philosophy is to combine sub-specialist expertise, evidence-based treatment and innovation with an individual approach to each patient. Wherever possible, treatment is focused on preserving function and avoiding unnecessary surgery; where surgery is required, his aim is to use the most appropriate modern technique to achieve the best possible outcome.

Outside medicine, Joideep is a keen sports enthusiast and enjoys football, tennis, golf and skiing. He is also passionate about food, is a founding member of a steak club, and remains particularly proud of his homemade pizza.
