CT Scan

Clear, highly accurate imaging to diagnose joint pain and guide your treatment plan.

World-class CT scanning, diagnostics and expert care for rapid injury assessment.

A CT scan uses X-rays to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body. The CT scanner takes pictures from different angles around the body and combines them to build a 3D image, giving your consultant a closer look at the area causing concern.

You may be referred for a CT scan when a standard X-ray doesn’t provide enough detail. It can be particularly helpful for assessing complex fractures or changes affecting a joint. The images can also help your consultant plan surgery if you’re going to have an operation, or check how well treatment is working.

The scan is usually quick and straightforward. Your radiographer will explain what’s happening and help you feel at ease throughout.

How is a CT scan carried out?

Phase 1

Positioning

Your radiographer helps you lie comfortably on the scanning table. The scanner is a large ring-shaped machine, and the table gently moves through its open centre while images are taken.

Phase 2

Contrast Dye (If Required)

If your scan requires a contrast dye to highlight specific areas clearly, a small tube (cannula) is placed into a vein, usually in your arm, to administer the dye during the procedure.

Phase 3

The Scan

You will need to stay as still as possible while the images are captured. Let your radiographer know beforehand if this is difficult or if you need assistance to feel more comfortable. The scan typically takes about 10 minutes.
